Rustoleum or Topside

Post by dumkopf on December 25th 2007, 12:20 am

Which paint is best, with regards to price, color choice and ease of use. I've seen great results with both, but it seems that the Topside paints are easier to use. Englighten me, please? Easier in that, topside paints self-level much better.

Hey Man,
Having used both paints, I will lay out my personal observations.
- Rustoleum sticks to anything and does not fish eye like Topside paint can.
- Topside paint is far glossier than rusto provided that the topside is a polyurethane paint.
- The self leveling qualities of Topside are much much better than Rusto. The car I am painting now has no peel at all, but It was a constant battle when I painted the Camaro a year ago.
- And about the price. Paint price is usually determined by the amount of pigments contained in the paint. That being said I belived that Is why Topside paints cover so well with fewer coats and are twice the price of Rustoleum. So its more expensive but you shold be able to cover more area with less paint.

Those are my observations, and so far I'm sold on the boat paint for painting cars. The sanding that I dont have to do every two coats is worth the extra cost imho. But you really cant go wrong either way; plenty of people have shown great results with both types of paint.

Hope that helped

dumkopf,

Here is an example of fish eye in paint. It usually occurs over a contaminated area. Oils, silicones, waxes, etc on the surface before you paint will cause this. You have to make sure you clean the entire area before paint if you want this to be avoided. If not you will be sanding them out every time you coat. And even still they will show up in the same spot if not cleaned properly.

i'm assuming that Topside is similar to Brightside? where is the best place to get either of the marine paints? can the marine paints be tinted to match certain colors?

I assumed by topside, he was referring to the type of polyurethane enamel boat paints which includes paints like Brightside and Epifanes. I bought my Brightside from West Marine. It can be found cheaper from online stores such as Jamestown Distributors. As far as I know the paints are not tinted by any of the Marine stores, but surely someone somewhere could tint the paint for you.

I used to work at Sherwin Williams paint company and people would bring in outside brand paints. We would tint it for them for no charge. If you have any near you, give them a call.
