I used that rust converter back when I worked in a body shop in the early 80s. We bought it in 5 gallon buckets and it smelled like chocolate milk when we sprayed it! The body shop I managed only did tractor trailers, and the ones from up north had to be sandblasted before we did anything and we'd spray the stuff on the frame rails. I also used it on my LTD and Dodge pickup. It goes by several names. Dries rock hard and works.

so.. what was that adhesive called that supposedly bonds metal?

also, for small little areas I need to smooth out in a crease, where there's scratches and pinholes.. is it best to fill those with bondo.. or something else?

how often do you sand? and do you wetsand or? I'm about to be on my 2nd coat, it seems hard to cover up the grayish primer with the paint so thin lol.

Here's a few pics. I had the entire thing masked, but i knew it was gonna be a few days before i got to do another coat, and I was afraid i'd be cleaning up a mushy newspaper mess.

if ya got two coats on then its time to sand ya its thin at this point but it will cover what ya want now is to get it flat and smooth /start with a higher grit and only go down a grit if you have to popcorn

is the sanding just to smooth the orange peel and runs? or is it to make it shine?

The sanding between coat's smooth's the op,you progress to higher grit's as you get closer to you last coat, then sand with 1200 to 3000 grit before you buff to get the shine. Very Happy

more questions..

Whats the best way to Buff the car? Can it be done by hand? I don't have a buffer. Also, for the red trim.. is it better to brush it on with a foam brush, or rattle can it?

Yes, but hoooo-doggy!!! A whole car? YOUR car? My guess is that you would end up with carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis or something. I once did a pair of doors, and used to think that my cheap *** would do a whole car by hand, but not any more. I'd cobble something together with a drill before I'd do it by hand.

I have done it by hand, but I was 17 and had too much energy. No reason to do it by hand, especially on a mammoth vehicle like yours. Get a good buffer. It'll pay for itself in medical bills later.

i would use a roller for your trim if you can/ you can always try to use the foam brush and then go back over with a smaller roller// as for the rattle can /you take the chance of getting red on the rest of the car/un less your willing to mask off with paper /tape /and that call pull off spots of paint if not dry

Used some good masking tape, not "masking tape" but the kind specifically for this kind of thing. I sticks but not hard enough to pull paint off.

So yeah, after Halloween.. I'm going to get some help with fixing my shoddy body work. I wanted to be able to cruise around on Halloween in this thing so I had to draw the line somewhere. Good thing I went with a rusto paint job as its easily repainted!

So the stripes look better in the picture than they do in person..

I couldn't figure out how to get the trim off.. so I masked it.. well.. it had been masked since I rolled the white, so it was on there pretty good and it didn't want to come off without a fight.. so the edge where the trim is isn't too great. I used the rattle can gloss red.. and I would like to touch it up with a brush.. is there a small can I can buy to use with a brush? and what color would match?

Just get whatever red paint, and redo the stripe.

Ok, one last question..

I drilled holes for my light bars.. as can be seen here..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIQ8RbAyDmc&feature=player_embedded

and I think somehow I didn't wipe all the "metal bits" that the drill flew everywhere.. so now I have all these tiny brown spots on my hood, where I guess the metal bits have rusted.. grrr..

can I just lightly sand those spots down and repaint right there?

hey guys.. so its been a while..

here's how she looks now!

and while i've gotcha, we are entered into a costume contest. I'm trying to win my 4 year old (the staypuft marshmallow man) a replica ghost trap from the movie. We are about 15 votes from taking the lead. I'd appreciate it if you guys could go to this link and "like" the picture of my family in front of my car.
