71 VW Squareback - Two Tone

Post by MikeyBoy on July 11th 2011, 6:36 pm

Hey All,

Found this forum recently and read up. I have painted 2 cars with a roller before, and never had the patience to really do a good job. From 20 feet they looked fine, but not up close. So anyway, This is my 71 VW Squareback that I got recently after being hit by an unlicensed driver in my old car. I intend for it to be a blue and white two tone- basic concept below.

I have just painted the dash and door interiors and everything. On a squareback, everything inside that has not been painted is covered in vinyl.

This paint is a custom mix of royal blue and black, don't know the exact measurements. The exterior of this car will be painted with this blue as well, the white is going to be canvas white which is on order. I do find that the pictures don't do the paint justice as in person it seems much more vibrant.

Currently I am working on the outside, fixing small dents and dings.

Also, I posted in another spot but received no help. Does anyone know where I can find a hardener in California compatible with Rustoleum Stops Rust. I tried to get the Valspar enamel hardener but it has been outlawed in CA. Can I use some kind of acrylic enamel hardener? CA people speak up and help me out. Thanks.

Have you tried ebay for hardner? I see it all the time on there, maybe not from a big company but a little guy just trying to get rid of stuff. Another idea would be to take an enjoyable road with the significant other over the weekend.
One important suggestion.............since you are mixing two colors, mix quite a more than you think you need because even if you write down your mix you will never duplicate it.

I have not tried ebay, but I will check there. Do you know if it has to be alkyd enamel hardener or will acrylic enamel hardener work?

As far as my colors, I mixed twice as much as I anticipate using.

Those cars were all over when I was a kid, but now I never see them.

I'm not sure if you can mix the two types of hardner but you could ask one of the ebay sellers or better yet, just call a auto paint store.

I have found a source for the valspar enamel hardener... hopefully.

I will be spraying this car with an auto paint gun and compressor after the dents and dings are gotten rid of, with rustoleum.

Also, for anyone who would be interested, this was my first rustoleum paint job. It is sunrise red and it was rolled.

Also, I just took this picture of my dog hanging out in the square, thought any dog lovers might appreciate it.

No pictures to this update, but good news. I acquired a certain hardener through mailorder. Now when my paint arrives I will be good to go!

Welcome....Both great looking rides. You did a really nice job on the truck. Your dog looks like he's ready to go for a cruise.
