painting my 68 firebird

Post by 68poncho on July 13th 2011, 12:42 pm

Hey guys my names Ezra an I live up here in Northern Cali.I been checkin out this website for awhile and finally got signed up.So I saw this type of paint job on Youtube one day when lookin at how to properly primer your car and laughed. Then I started lookin into it more an more. Now Im a believer and am already knee deep into rollin my 'Bird.I started by settin up a makeshift paint booth(tarp) on the side of the house and then began sandin her down with 220 grit.Hit some of the imperfections with good ole bondo and then went at her with 400 grit.Got ahold of some grey Rusto primer and blasted her with that.So funny thing is I already knew the first coat or two was Supposed to look like crap and figured no biggie but honestly as soon as I put the paint down I thought **** what the hell did I get into affraid !?!Buuuut now that Im already done with coat #4 I'm breathin a lil easier!Im off work today so its round two of wetsandin and then coat #5.As soon as I figure out how Ill put pics up(got alot!)So I'll be back with more soon!

Can't wait to see pics. Always loved the firebirds (more so than the camero) though my favorite is the 2nd gen (70-72).

Just wonderin,I believe Im supposed to progress to 1000 grit for this session of wetsanding but not sure if thats gonna knock down all the orange peel?Maybe I should go at it with 800 or 600?I dunno but it definitely needs a Good wetsandin.

Start with 1000 and if you find you're killing you're self then back off to 800 and so on. Happy sanding.

I always loved the '67-'69 F bodies in black. I'm thinking a red pinstripe or maybe an HO stripe.

Still all Pontiac under the hood?

The smoother you get it when wetsanding without sanding through the paint, the better it will look when buffed, so yes I would sand till all orange peel is gone . The effort is worth it for a flawless black paint job. Just my 2 cent's worth.

It all depends on how flawless you want it. grin That is what happens when the paint is put on too thick. One thing you can do is use a fairly rough grit to taker down faster and then roll on a couple more very thin coats. Make your self happy, how much orange peel can YOU live with is the question. There will come a point when you say, "DONE".
