greetings to all 1st timer here

Post by rick howe on July 19th 2011, 8:33 am

I love this site been reading it for a long time now and could never get on so i got a new lap top and now i'm here. I just put my 8th coat of sunrise red on my triumph spitfire; now i need to know is 4 weeks of letting the paint rest before compounding enough. Just to let you know i took the old paint off right down to the metal ;primed it sanded the primer with 320 grit and began rolling; after the 1st coat dried sanded with 320 and laid down the next coat. This went on for 2 weeks giving the paint a days rest before the next coat and changing the sandpaper to 400;600;800;until the last coat where i used 1500 ; as for the mix i used 1 quart paint to 1 pint mineral spirits to 1 pint medium reducer this worked really well without drying to fast ; oh did i mention this all took place outside ; thank god no rain during this time sunny i'm going to try to put some pictures hope this works.[img][/img]

Rick,
Welcome. Looking forward to see ing pics of your car. What made you decide to use a reducer along with MS. Did you find that the paint flowed better?

paint reducer

Post by rick howe on July 19th 2011, 5:50 pm

Thanks for the welcome trying to load pictures but keep getting nothing so i'll keep trying; as for the reducer it helps in drying time and the paint flowed out smoother with less orange peel i also tried adding a hardener but that made the paint dry to fast and any unused paint became like jello; one thing i did like about the hardener it makes the paint have that wet look . Now what about buffing i ordered the Meguires 105 but should i wait to let the paint set and out gas.

Hi, welcome to the forum, can't wait to see your pic's,buffing should be fine after a month, But I would wait a few more week's before putting any wax or any sealing waxes, because when you buff you are exposing paint layer's that have not gassed off, hope this may help. These guy,s are a great, helpful ,Informative bunch!!!if you have any more question's, feel free to ask, I'm sure one of us can give you an answer.
