Rust question

Post by skirk on August 16th 2011, 9:02 am

i am working on a 66 chevy, plan on rolling it with rustoleum in a few weeks. areas that i have sanded and prepared, i sprayed with rustoleum automotive primer, looks good but there are places where there was some light rust. i sanded it down to metal prior to spraying primer. now after a couple months, there is some rust starting to show on the surface of the primer again. what is causing this and how to fix. can i just wipe the primer surface with something like "CLR" or something prior to rolling?

thanks

Regular primer is NOT waterproof so rust will come back. You need to sand the rust away again and, if it will be a while before you actually paint, put primer/sealer on it.

Primer is like a sponge, it will hold water & moisture. Rusto makes a good rust reformer http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=363 whipe your bare metal with that, let dry, top coat with primer, and try to get some paint on it within a weeks time if you're driving your car in the rain or if the primer is getting wet. Or like Mike suggested, seal it.
