sanding marks

Post by jvandyke on August 21st 2011, 10:25 am

Did my first attempt at this, first coat today. Pretty happy with the results. A few runs that I guess I can sand out when it dries (24 hours?) but I have an issue where I must not have gone over rough sanding well enough with finer grit as I can see the marks glaring out under the gloss black. Should just continue or is it in vane and would I be wiser to scuff this first coat (this is on the rear trunk lid) and hit it all over with primer filler spray bomb then sand smooth and start again?

PS, cross posting, wrong section the first time?

It all depends on how deep your sanding marks are. Sand it down smooth and see what happens. If you go to metal then you need to primer it again. What grit were you using when the scratches were made? They can also be filled with glaze and sanded back smooth but that would also have to be primed. I would just sand and put a second coat on and then go from there.

The sanding marks were in the base/old finish. I decided to just reprime and start the trunk over again. Now I have some similar marks in the hood. I'm hoping they will slowly disappear.
