How long can I wait to sand the paint before its too hard?

Post by muthstryker on September 5th 2011, 8:30 pm

Hey guys,

Im wondering how long I can wait to sand the paint on the car before its too hard and becomes hard to sand. I have carpal tunnel surgery tomorrow so I wont be able to do any sanding for almost 3-4 months until im healed properly. If you guys could give me an answer tonight that would be great!! That way I know if I need to pull an all nighter and sand until the paint is dull!!

i was told it would depend on the temp and if its in the sun//but it had been about 2 months and then i sanded the back of my deck lid the paint was no where near hard and it was over 100 down here the whole time so i think you will be fine hope all is well with your surgery thumbs up

I think your paint will be fine. Piant dries from the inside out so it usally takes a month or so for the paint to outgas anyway. I've wet sanded paint that was 20 years old or older and fresh paint so for paint to be to old to sand I haven't heard anything like that before I wouldn't worry about that at all.

Just think about your surgery and take it easy like the doc said, then when the time comes then get back to your paint. Use your down time for research and studying and maybe you'll find some new idea's and different techniques.

Good luck and hope everything goes well too thumbs up

Good luck on your surgery, keep us posted on your recovery. Are you having both hands done or just one?

Hope everything came out O.K. I had both hands done 7 years ago but 2 months between them at the age of 60. I had the major type done and was running my lawn mower and chain saw in 6 weeks. With the less evasive type they do now you should be back to normal real soon. Physical therapy was pretty easy also because I had 2 cute therapists and they found it hard to believe how fast I recovered.
Listen to your body. It will tell you how you are doing. I would push until I felt fatigue start in the hand and then I would stop.
Good luck.
