Fixing to roll my 84 Hurst Olds.... Suggestions?!?

Post by 84HurstOlds on September 5th 2011, 9:38 pm

Fixing to roll the Alluminum color paint on my '84 Hurst Olds this weekend... Never done this before, but know someone who has and his Fiero looks **** good! I was just wondering if you guys had any suggestions, or tips! Also, what is the ratio to mixing paint with the mineral spirits?

Any help is appreciated!

Cool! Thank you! My uncle painted his '86 Fiero GT yellow, he actually has a thread on here.. Anyways he will be some help if I have any questions! I actually did kind of a test run on the trunk lid and fin, and it looked good with just 2 coats! I am very satisfied with the color and can only imagine what the car will look like with 8 or 10 coats!

Thanks,
Joe

I found the 50/50 mix to be a tad too thin and found that 60/40 worked a little better. I also bought 2 rollers and multiple replacement rollers. I would have one of the rollers for painting and the other dry roller, to roll over the paint to pop the bubbles and to also keep the paint from running down the side of the car.

My uncle I believe did the 60/40, his was great! I have a little experience with this.. We actually started painting my dads 83 Hurst and stopped.. It was just the wrong time to paint, we were very busy! I have actually started painting my fin, and it is looking good! That is also a great idea about the multiple rollers, I will definitely do that! I have also snapped some pics, and will post later! I will start a project thread, and post pics of my progress! Smile

I have had a few bad comments, and friends saying... "that is stupid!", but I know what it will turn out to be, I have seen one in person!

I think it's awesome that a young guy like yourself is into the old car thing and not rolling around in some jap-crap.

Hell yeah! I love old cars, and would take one over any new car! I have to say that I'm probably the only high schooler in Austin that drives a 1984 Hurst Olds on a daily basis! We have lots of old cars... My H/O, my dads 1983 15th Anniversary Hurst Olds, a 1970 Cutlass 'S', a 1976 Trans Am, and a 1979 Trans Am! We just love the classics! My friends always know what car I'm driving! I also like old cars because I can fix whatever's wrong, and take more pride in my car!

Hi Hurst i used 50% paint 25% mineral and 25% reducer the paint went on smooth and dried in less time i also tried the blow dryer set on cool and never had to brush or roll to get rid of the bubbles; i did try hardener but the paint that you had left would be wasted it tuned into jello so if you use hardener only mix small batches and have fun if things go wrong it was cheap just start over; good luck.

Hey guys! Sorry, I haven't been on in a few days.. I have started painting and am pretty satisfied with the job so far! I am a little worried about a clear coat on it.. I didn't think about the Aluminum not having a gloss to it.. If I don't get a gloss somehow, I will have wasted my time.. I do not want to spray a gloss on because I am not the best at that, and would rather not half *** it after all this hard work.. Anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks,
Joe

If you have the place and ability to spray, why not? Spray it on (watching for runs) and when it dries, sand as normal and buff.
