New guy..with a pic of my roadster project...

Post by mike3137 on September 27th 2011, 9:31 pm

Just found the forum, some impressive paint work on here!....Here's a shot of my roadster with its spray can gloss black rustoleum paint...haven't spent a lot of time on the cut and buff work yet but it looks pretty good already...Over the winter I plan to do a few more coats and a more aggressive cut and buff...

You want pics..i got em!!
It was an old hotrod, found shot up in a field, and I built it as an old school hotrod, meaning no billet, radials, disk brakes, no power anything, like it would have been in the late 50s. I thought about running an old flathead V8, but didn't want to spend that much $$$ for that little amount of horsepower..besides a lot of guys back then immediately switched to the SBC V8 when it came out in 1955..

Here's a few shots the first was after Katrina flooded my garage, then some re-rebuilding shots following....

Parts just propped together in this shot,,

Working out the engine position

17 bullet holes in the rear quarter alone...Front is a chromed 4" dropped axle with 39 lincoln brakes and '59 Buick finned drums...the hot setup 50+ years ago, lol

Rolling....at last. Wheels now on the car now are WW2 era artillery wheels,...(my old 37 Ford is in the background)

One last shot with its old garage buddy, the camaro hardtop I just sold so I can build the 67 Convert I have in pieces.

Okay...don't want to over do it, but I have a ton of pics.

You nailed the look. I like the dropped headlights and the banjo steering wheel. What steering box did you go with?

Thanks for the compliments guys,

I drove it for a while in bare metal, bullet holes and all, but got tired of people asking if it was a ratrod...which it isnt. No offense meant to those into rat rods..Ended up replacing that quarter with a better one because it was badly bowed and twisted along the trunk gutter from whatever it was shot with...maybe buckshot, or a .45 cal. and could not get the decklid to fit. Actually I ended up with enough spare parts I threw together a second (really rough!) roadster and sold it to a friend

Steering now is vega, one of two concessions I had to make to more modern parts, the other being an alternator rather than a generator. Tried an F1 box, and could not get the steering column in a comfortable driving position..(i'm 6'2" and had to spend a lot of time with pedal spacing, seat height and steering wheel placement to fit in it)

Shades of 1958. How old did you say you were? LOL 63falcon is right. I was there and this is a time capsule right down to the brake and clutch on the floor. One question tho...........where is the necking knob for the steering wheel? Laughing

Thanks I tried to build the car to that era, but nope, I wasn't around yet! I've built a bunch of 67-68 camaros and such, and a streetrod or two but always wanted a bare bones traditional style, real steel roadster with a early small block and a 4 speed. Started gathering parts in 2001. It has minimal creature comforts, but I get a kick out of driving it. In fact I put about 300 miles on it last week...great weather here right now!
