Test Lid...something a little different....

I'm really into the low rider scene, the cars, the custom paint and the culture. The Falcon is going to get turned into a mild custom/lowrider by the time in done with it. I was playing around on the test lid I rolled with Rusto white as my practice piece. I decided to do some lace panels and an endless line panel. I got the lace done but ran out of 1/8" line tape so that will wait for another day. I used a spray bomb of Rusto safety red. I know this isn't everybodys cup of tea so go easy on me......

Never seen that method of painting before.....learn something everyday. Pattern seems to transfer well. I don't think I'd do it....but I guess it would depend of the pattern on the lace and type of car being painted....football team logos, USMC emblem, HD logo, etc.

I use the 3M fine line tape. It curves really easy. For the lid project I was using 1/4" and the tightest radius I can get without it wrinkling is 1". I pull the tape tight and using my thump I can work a nice tight radius.
For the center section I want to do a continuous line pattern and 1/4 tape is too wide. The pics shows a continuous line panel. He used 1/8" wide tape and you can see how "tight" his curves are.

Ok, thanks. I'm using really, really wide tape.. lol. I'm just wondering because I'll be adding some pinstripes and was dreading doing the curve over the wheel wells.

The 3M tape works great, you won't get any bleed through and it doesn't leave glue marks on your paint (unless you let it bake in the sun for a week...lol)

Man that is a dying art, those car's are just awesome to look at, some time's the old school paint guy's just don't get reconized enough!!!!!

I'd guess the lace lays pretty flat on the panel? The red looks to have laid out good. Did you secure the lace in any way before spraying?

with lace you just lay it or tape it if its vertical. You want it pretty flat on the surface, and the distance you spray from affects the final result. Its one of those things where you really have to do test panels to find the result you want. My thing was do do it very light with black over a gold base, then do candy colors over it.. the 'ghost' effect

I'm sure lace would have to be sprayed over and not rolled because the lace would probably move from the pressure and there is the chance of under bleeding. However................. we do have access to spray cans lol.
Word was, back in the day, the originator of this (famous custom painter but I can't remember his name now) had a pair of lace panties on his bench and accidentally got some over spray on them and liked the effect. I always wondered what his girlfriend said later

That blue Comet I posted is a buddy of mine. He painted the lace and the line panel with Krylon.
