Rustoleum primers and Brightside?

Post by Vinnems on December 18th 2011, 5:35 am

Was wondering if anyone has used Rusto primers with Brightside paint? I know mixing products can be bad, wanted to to see how it worked out for others with this mixture.

What other projects have done this? The urathane brightside paint does not eat through it? I am looking to use brightside but I want to avoid the expensive interlux primers. I have a lot of bare metal to cover...

Urethane does not eat or bite into the primer, It chemically bond's to the surface by chemical cross linking, the old laquer's bit into the primer, would actually be the same as using rusto primer on a wood project and then adding a urethane top coat, should not be a problem.

Ok, thanks for the response. I think I will go with the rustoleum primer with brightside on top. Why does normal automotive paint react with the rustoleum?

Good automotive paint uses a catalyst. Its meant to go over a catalyzed primer. The solvents in automotive paint are too harsh and will almost instantly wrinkle rusto primer. On the other hand, you could use an epoxy or urethane primer then top coat with rustoleum...
BTW, Ppg's Omni Epoxy primer/sealer is pretty cheap, and super durable.

I'm working on a 66 Valiant, 2dr sedan. Trying to put together a bracket car.
I've done the mini tub, frame connectors, disc brake swap, 8 point bar, narrowed 8 3/4..... She only has to look good going down the track, so the roll on paint job suits me perfectly. (dont take that the wrong way Very Happy )
Nice looking Falcon by the way...
